What happened: AI Centres of Excellence set up for four sectors

The Government of India established three Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the sectors of Agriculture, Sustainable Cities, and Healthcare. The Government of India also announced and established an AI CoE for Education with funding support at IIT Madras. The initiative was discussed in a written reply by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, in the Rajya Sabha.

Institution-wise leadership and announced budget

The three AI-CoEs in Agriculture, Sustainable Cities, and Healthcare were led by the following institutions and supported under a combined outlay of ₹990 crore.

The AI-CoE for Education was announced in the Union Budget 2025-26 with an outlay of ₹500 crore and established at IIT Madras.
