What happened

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has presented the IndiaAI Mission as a national framework to democratize technology, create economic opportunities, and support employment for youth while addressing artificial intelligence-related risks. The release says the mission works through seven pillars and focuses on AI models, applications, datasets, talent development, and affordable compute.

The release also says the Government has approved a scheme for 58 Artificial Intelligence Centres of Excellence (AI-CoEs) across States and Union Territories, with state and industry collaboration. According to the release, Tamil Nadu has been approved 2 AI-CoEs.

Background and earlier position

India’s digital economy already has a large technology base. The release places the IndiaAI Mission on top of India’s information technology sector, which it describes as having an annual revenue of $300 billion and a workforce of 60 lakh. The policy challenge is not only adoption of artificial intelligence tools, but also building domestic capability in models, compute, data access, and skilled manpower.

Before the current announcement, the core policy question was whether India would remain mainly a user of foreign artificial intelligence systems or build stronger indigenous capacity. The IndiaAI Mission is designed to push India toward the second path by supporting sovereign models, domain-specific models, and institutional capacity through AI-CoEs.
