What happened: NMEO-OS expansion and Pulses Mission rollout
The Government of India, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, reported two linked interventions aimed at improving domestic production of oilseeds and pulses—National Mission on Edible Oils–Oilseeds (NMEO-OS) and the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses.
Key reported dates and output targets are: NMEO-OS was approved on 3 October 2024 with a target to increase primary oilseed production from 39 million tonnes (2022–23) to 69.7 million tonnes by 2030–31. The Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses was launched on 11 October 2025 with a target to increase pulse production from 242 lakh tonnes to 350 lakh tonnes by 2030–31.
How NMEO-OS works: cluster approach, seed access, and post-harvest support
NMEO-OS is implemented using a cluster-based approach with market linkages. The Government reported that over 600 Value Chain Clusters were operationalized across the country. Cluster management is done through Value Chain Partners such as Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), cooperatives, and other agencies.
The mission provides farmers with free high-quality seeds of latest high yielding varieties and training on good agricultural practices inside these clusters.
