What happened: Ministry of Culture expands school outreach for Indian classical dances under NEP 2020
The Government of India, through the Ministry of Culture, promotes the inclusion of Indian classical dances in school education in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020. The Ministry’s approach uses autonomous institutions under the Ministry of Culture—especially the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) and the Sangeet Natak Akademi—to build exposure, training, and scholarships for teachers, students, and young artists.
Key components of the school-focused promotion
CCRT supports art-integrated learning by training teachers and students of Government and Government-aided schools in Indian classical and folk dance traditions. In Madhya Pradesh, the training includes dance forms such as Kathak, Rai, Matki, Karma, and Grida. CCRT also runs a regional presence through its Regional Centre at Damoh (Madhya Pradesh) to promote local and regional art forms.
Sangeet Natak Akademi promotes Indian performing arts among school children through the Kala Dharohar series, which includes lectures, workshops, and performances.
