What happened (MoE statement in Rajya Sabha)?
The Ministry of Education (MoE) stated that NEP 2020 emphasises holistic development of learners through strengthening health, wellness and environmental awareness in schools. In a written Rajya Sabha reply by the Minister of State for Education, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, MoE highlighted school initiatives and curriculum work that support hygiene, health, nutrition and environmental consciousness among students.
Background and earlier position (education governance and NEP 2020 framing)
Education is in the Concurrent List of the Constitution of India. MoE also noted that most schools operate under administrative control of the respective State Government/Union Territory (UT) administration. Against this setting, MoE pointed to NEP 2020 as the policy direction for adding health, wellness and environmental awareness into school education.
