What happened: UIDAI completes over 2 crore Mandatory Biometric Updates via school-level camps
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) completed over 20 million (over 2 crore) Mandatory Biometric Updates (MBU) for school children across India. UIDAI conducted the updates through a nationwide, mission-mode effort in which school-level camps enabled children to complete Aadhaar biometric updates. UIDAI also coordinated outreach with State and Union Territory education departments.
UIDAI’s implementation used technical integration with the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) so that schools and education stakeholders could get visibility of MBU status of children.
UIDAI’s school drive started in September 2025 and covered over 1.56 lakh schools. Through these camps, school children completed Aadhaar biometric updates in an age-appropriate schedule linked to Aadhaar MBU requirements.
Background and earlier position: Aadhaar capture and what MBU changes
UIDAI’s Aadhaar enrolment for children below five years captures demographic information and a photograph, while fingerprints and iris biometrics are not captured at that age because those biometrics are still developing. MBU is meant to ensure that a child’s Aadhaar continues to contain updated biometric information as the child grows.
