What happened (CCEA approval for NH-22 upgradation in Bihar)
On 20 August 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the upgradation of the Muzaffarpur–Sitamarhi–Sonbarsa section of NH-22 to a four-lane standard in Bihar.
The road project will be implemented on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at a total capital cost of Rs. 3590.73 crore for a length of 82.578 km.
Background and earlier position (why this NH-22 section matters)
The Muzaffarpur–Sitamarhi–Sonbarsa stretch of NH-22 is positioned as a feeder corridor in Bihar’s expanding national highway network. The corridor connects the India–Nepal border at Sonbarsa with Bihar’s economic centre Muzaffarpur, which lies on the NH-27 East–West Corridor.
The project is also described as fitting within the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan approach, where road upgrades are expected to improve linkage to industrial areas, railway stations, and logistics hubs.
