What happened: MPMS is notified by MeitY with ₹62,500 crore outlay
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology notified the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) with a budgetary outlay of ₹62,500 crore. MPMS targets increased global competitiveness through higher Domestic Value Addition and stronger domestic mobile manufacturing capabilities.
MPMS is designed to support Indian mobile phone brands, improve technological sovereignty, encourage Indian patents in design and R&D, and generate employment. The scheme also includes evaluation to ensure that intellectual property is genuinely Indian-owned and provides non-fiscal support measures in consultation with the industry.
Background and earlier position: continuation after PLI-LSEM and Make in India push
MeitY links the scheme to Make in India-driven growth in electronics manufacturing since FY 2014-15, with mobile phone manufacturing playing a major role in electronics production and exports and in India’s position in global value chains.
MeitY also states that the Prime Minister’s PLI-LSEM scheme ended on 31 March 2026, and MPMS is notified to sustain and scale up mobile phone production.
