What happened: Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology notifies MPMS
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology notified the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) to encourage domestic smartphone assembly and increase local value addition in mobile phone manufacturing.
IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said MPMS aims to build Indian brands, including Indian design, intellectual property (IP), and trademarks.
MPMS has an outlay of ₹62,500 crore, approved by the Union Cabinet on July 15.
MPMS is presented as building on an earlier incentive programme that ran from 2020 through the most recent financial year.
MPMS provides incentives to mobile phone manufacturers in two linked components:
