What happened: NADCP outcomes on FMD and Brucellosis

The National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) launched in 2019 is a nationwide livestock health initiative focused on controlling and eradicating Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis through vaccination and surveillance. PIB reports that NADCP has administered 147.16 crore FMD vaccine doses benefitting 8.04 crore farmers, and has strengthened disease surveillance using antibody (sero-) testing and monitoring. Reported disease incidence and antibody prevalence trends indicate reduced circulation of FMD and improved herd immunity.

What happened: reported immunisation, surveillance, and service delivery scale

PIB reports the following implementation and monitoring scale under NADCP and allied digital delivery: (i) Bharat Pashudhan Portal registration of 39.00 crore+ livestock by July 2026 with unique 12-digit Tag IDs, (ii) operation of 4,019 Mobile Veterinary Units (MVUs) across 29 States and Union Territories, and (iii) doorstep services benefiting 136 lakh farmers and treating 276 lakh animals. PIB also notes that NADCP has extended FMD vaccination since 2024 to pastoral sheep and goats in migratory areas to prevent spread along migratory routes.

Background and earlier position: why FMD and Brucellosis control mattered

FMD is described as a highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, and pigs. PIB links FMD to reduced milk production, slower growth, reproductive performance impacts, lower working capacity of draft animals, and limits on international market access. Brucellosis is described as a bacterial reproductive disease in cattle and buffalo (caused by Brucella abortus) where vaccination is treated as the most effective and sustainable control measure because curative treatment is not available for bovines in practice.
