What happened
The 14th BRICS Science Ministerial Meet was chaired by India. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences and MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh, announced that BRICS Science Ministers unanimously adopted the “Chennai Declaration” to strengthen Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) cooperation among BRICS nations.
Background and earlier position
Under India’s BRICS Chairship, the “Chennai Declaration” is described as the Chennai Consensus-style approach that keeps a people-centred, humanity-first focus for STI cooperation. The declaration also records the maturity of BRICS STI cooperation through long-running collaboration across thematic working groups and repeated youth and innovation programmes.
