What happened: 14th BRICS STI Ministerial Meeting begins in Chennai

The 14th BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Ministerial Meeting began in Chennai with an inaugural address by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences and MoS (Independent Charge) for PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh. Dr. Singh welcomed delegations from BRICS member countries and stated that India has chosen “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” as the theme of India’s BRICS Presidency in 2026.

Dr. Singh stated that science, technology and innovation should serve humanity by enhancing resilience, driving inclusive growth, promoting sustainable development and fostering equitable partnerships among nations. He highlighted rapid transformation driven by emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, quantum technologies, advanced materials, biotechnology, photonics, geospatial technologies and high-performance computing, and called for stronger international collaboration so that innovation remains accessible, affordable, trusted and sustainable.

Dr. Singh described BRICS as well placed to foster a cooperative, responsible and future-oriented innovation ecosystem, supported by BRICS member countries’ large population, scientific talent and growing research capabilities. He also referred to the STI Steering Committee, senior officials and multiple STI working groups as key channels sustaining dialogue and translating it into practical cooperation and outcomes.

Background and earlier position: BRICS STI cooperation as a multi-track platform

Dr. Singh stated that BRICS STI cooperation has evolved into a platform with multiple cooperation tracks: research collaboration, innovation partnerships, young scientist exchanges, research infrastructures and thematic working groups. He further stated that India’s BRICS Presidency includes a comprehensive review of BRICS STI priorities to align cooperation with emerging scientific and technological frontiers and with developmental aspirations of societies.
