What happened: Manipur community team seeks an updated NRC in New Delhi
A 10-member community-representative team from Manipur left for New Delhi to seek an updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) ahead of the census exercise. The demand is described as an Assam-like NRC update, meaning NRC updation and verification using an approach comparable to the Assam NRC model.
The team included members from the Meitei community, Pan gal (Manipuri Muslims), the Naga community, and other indigenous communities in Manipur. A team leader stated that the team would take the public demand to Union ministers, Bharatiya Janata Party (Bharatiya Janata Party) leaders, and officials of the Intelligence Bureau.
Contemporaneous unrest and administrative boycotts in Imphal Valley
On the same day as the team’s departure, there was a boycott of central and state government offices in Manipur. A civil society and student-led group, the Campaign for Just and Free Delimitation (described as supporting the pro-NRC stance), announced an indefinite boycott across five districts in Imphal Valley after a 48-hour general shutdown ended earlier.
