What happened: Russian strike on Kyiv and surrounding areas

A Russian air strike on Kyiv and surrounding areas reportedly killed 16 people and injured more than 40 people. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy linked the reported death toll to alleged failure by Ukraine’s allies to replenish Ukraine’s air-defence missile stocks (interceptor missiles used to shoot down incoming threats).

Ukraine’s air force described the reported mix and scale of the attack:

Russia used dozens of cruise missiles alongside ballistic and hypersonic missiles (different guided-missile classes).Russia launched 168 drones.Ukraine reported downing nearly 90% of the drones.Ukraine reported that most cruise missiles were downed.

Russia’s defence ministry stated that Russia struck Kyiv and nearby regions, including facilities connected with: drone-component productiona military depota logistics hub

Zelenskyy also characterised the strike as among the war’s most cynical and large-scale attacks.
