What happened in the Lok Sabha debate on NEET-UG protests and police force
Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and K.C. Venugopal demanded accountability for police action against NEET-UG protesters during a Lok Sabha debate related to an anti-question-paper leak law amendment.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra asked the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to explain who authorised the use of force against protesters, including pellet guns and assault rifles.
Vadra argued that every lathi blow damaged government credibility more than it harmed protesters. Vadra cited her visit to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where she met an injured student’s family.
K.C. Venugopal said those responsible for attacks on peaceful protesters must be identified and held accountable. Venugopal began by reading a suicide note reportedly left behind by a NEET candidate to describe severe pressure on students.
K.C. Venugopal cited National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data claiming student suicides rose from 8,068 in 2014 to 14,488 in the most recent period he referenced. Venugopal described it as an emergency and connected it to deeper education-system problems.
