What happened in the Lok Sabha debate
Congress general secretary (organisation) K. C. Venugopal and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra demanded accountability for police action against students protesting the NEET-UG question paper leak.
During a Lok Sabha debate on an amendment related to an anti-paper leak law, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to explain who authorised the force used against protesters. She also raised allegations that pellet guns and assault rifles were used against protesters and asked whether the police action was aimed at terrorists.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra argued that lathi blows damaged government credibility more than they injured students and said she visited a hospital to meet an injured student.
K. C. Venugopal argued that those responsible for attacks on peaceful protesters must be identified and held accountable. He read out a suicide note attributed to a NEET candidate to highlight student pressure.
Venugopal cited National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data and claimed that student suicides rose sharply between 2014 and the present. He described the situation as an emergency reflecting deeper problems in the education system, including coaching, dependence on courts for justice, and police violence against protesters.
