Mullaperiyar Dam storage has fallen sharply in July to 112.9 feet, well below 131.4 feet on the same date last year. The low level is significant because the dam supports irrigation in border districts and also affects tourism and drinking-water supply in nearby localities.
The storage decline is hurting farming in the districts that depend on Mullaperiyar water. The note says nearly 1.5 lakh acres of farmland depend on the dam, including 14,700 hectares in Theni district alone.
