What happened: Indian Tea Association released two tea-sector White Papers

The Indian Tea Association (ITA) published two sector-focused White Papers—one for Darjeeling tea and another for Dooars and Terai tea. ITA’s stated aim is to support revival and sustainable development of the tea sector through targeted interventions and policy-linked financing.

ITA’s Darjeeling White Paper presents a steep fall in Darjeeling tea production and links the urgency of support to protection of Darjeeling tea’s Geographical Indication (GI) heritage (GI means a registered product identity tied to a specific place). ITA gives the following production numbers:

- 1990: 14.49 million kg

- 2025: 5.6 million kg
