Bribe sought from kin of prisoners: jail officials held

The Delhi Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) has arrested 11 people, including an assistant superintendent, six jail warders, two advocates, and two others, for allegedly running a bribery racket inside Delhi prisons. The case is relevant for UPSC because it combines prison governance, undertrial rights, corruption in public service, and custodial oversight.
According to the ACB, the accused allegedly coerced families of undertrial prisoners to pay money for the prisoners’ safety, protection, preferential treatment, and other unauthorized facilities. The alleged conduct points to misuse of custodial authority and raises questions about accountability inside prison administration.
The ACB said a case was registered on February 9 after a complaint from a man who alleged that he was forced to make regular payments to ensure the safety and comfort of his father and brother, who were lodged as undertrials in Rohini Jail. After the complaint, the ACB registered a first information report, formed an investigation team, and laid a trap to apprehend the accused.
UPSC may connect the Delhi prison bribery case to prison reforms, the rights of undertrial prisoners, accountability of jail staff, and ethical issues in public administration. The case can be used to discuss why oversight mechanisms matter in custodial institutions.
