A Parliamentary Joint Committee examining the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024—which seeks to enable simultaneous elections across the country—is reported to be unlikely to meet its timeline for submitting a report during the Monsoon Session.
The committee, led by BJP Lok Sabha member P. P. Chaudhary, is scheduled to visit Uttar Pradesh beginning July 9 for consultations with government representatives and opposition leaders.
Chaudhary indicated that the committee plans to engage a wider set of stakeholders across additional states. The reform is expected to be a defining one for India’s post-independence era, though substantial work remains.
The committee’s deadline was set for the first week of the last upcoming parliamentary session, and an extension is likely again if the Monsoon timeline slips.
