What happened

Tamil-speaking minority parties and groups in Sri Lanka have created a joint platform called a medai. The forum is not a formal coalition or election pact. It is a shared space for parties such as the All Ceylon Makkal Congress, Ceylon Workers’ Congress, Democratic Tamil National Alliance, Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, and the Tamil Progressive Alliance to press common demands.

The platform focuses on three priorities: a new Constitution, overdue Provincial Council elections, and settlement of land disputes affecting communities in the north, east, and hill country.

Background and earlier position

The participating parties have different political histories and often compete with or oppose one another. The shared platform reflects a common set of unresolved grievances among war-affected Tamils, Malaiyaha Tamils, and Muslims.
