What happened
The Bar Council of India has issued a circular laying down strict social media norms for advocates, law students, and legal interns. The circular treats courtroom dignity, professional confidentiality, and truthful legal communication as the central concerns.
The circular bars content that sensationalises court proceedings or judicial work. It also prohibits making reels, videos, or promotional material inside court premises, courtrooms, corridors, bar rooms, chambers, or judicial buildings in a way that undermines dignity and decorum.
The Bar Council of India further forbids clipping or circulating livestreams with captions, music, commentary, thumbnails, or voiceovers that ridicule or distort the conduct of judges, lawyers, litigants, or witnesses. It also bans AI-generated images, deepfake videos, voice-cloned recordings, fabricated judgments, misleading legal advice, undisclosed AI-generated legal content, clickbait claims, and misuse of professional identity.
Why the Bar Council of India acted
The circular seeks to stop content that moves from legal education into breaches of confidentiality, manufactured authority, and disrespect to courts and the Bar. The regulatory concern is not only online misinformation but also the monetisation of legal identity through attention-driven content.
