What happened: Suvendu Adhikari’s six-month processing timeline for CAA applications in West Bengal

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that all pending citizenship applications under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in West Bengal would be processed within six months.

Adhikari stated that the CAA’s purpose is to grant citizenship rather than deprive anyone of citizenship. Adhikari also alleged that the previous Trinamool Congress government misled people about the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Adhikari said a total of 2,30,605 CAA-related applications had been received across West Bengal. Adhikari cited district-wise certificate numbers for the top districts in the figures he mentioned:
