What happened (custodial death and reported State actions)
TMC worker Birju Keot died in police custody in Halisahar, North 24 Parganas, on August 8. Keot’s family alleged that torture in police custody caused his death.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited Keot’s residence and announced support measures for the family. The State’s reported measures included the following:
West Bengal announced ₹10 lakh compensation. West Bengal also announced a job for Keot’s wife. Suvendu Adhikari ordered a magistrate-level probe into Keot’s custodial death and stated that police protocol for custodial death cases would be followed.
Suvendu Adhikari also reported policing accountability actions. The investigating officer was suspended. The police station officer-in-charge was “closed,” reported as transferred or removed from the post.
