What the “Science Quiz” asks (patent-to-industry revision through dates and inventions)
“The Science Quiz” presents five fill-in-the-blank prompts that require matching patent-related information—such as invention descriptions and specific dates—to inventors or companies. The quiz uses time anchors to connect each invention to a technology domain and its later uptake.
The five fill-in-the-blank patent questions (as stated in the quiz)
1) Induction motor patent: the quiz asks for the engineer who received a patent in 1888 for an induction motor using rotating magnetic fields.
2) Cotton gin seed-removal mechanism: the quiz asks for the cotton gin’s seed-removal machine name, using Eli Whitney’s patent date anchor as May 14, 1794. The clue connects adoption of the mechanism to historical entrenchment of slavery.
