The Supreme Court granted interim protection to residents affected by demolition action in Rajasthan's border districts. The affected properties include mosques, madrasas, dargahs, homes, and other structures.
A petition filed by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind on behalf of 40 affected people led the court to order that no demolitions be carried out for two weeks for the petitioners' properties. The Supreme Court also directed the petitioners to approach the Rajasthan High Court's Division Bench at Jodhpur.
Background and earlier position
The dispute follows a fact-finding visit to the border districts after at least four mosques were demolished in Barmer and Jaisalmer. The petitioners had earlier approached the Rajasthan High Court.
The Rajasthan High Court rejected the concerns by citing national security in sensitive border areas and ruled out religious discrimination.
