What happened

A dispute inside Kerala’s Left Democratic Front (LDF) about who would receive the Deputy Leader of Opposition position reportedly caused political friction between Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam.

Background and earlier position

Pinarayi Vijayan stated that the Deputy Leader of Opposition position would go to CPI(M), which leads the Opposition front. Vijayan also said that the remaining requirement was submitting a letter to the Speaker naming the Deputy Leader of Opposition.

What changed now

Binoy Viswam responded by disputing Vijayan’s claim. Binoy Viswam said Vijayan’s statement was not believable and added that it was unbecoming for the Opposition leader to make such a statement, implying lack of political maturity.
