U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor made a maiden visit to Jammu & Kashmir. Gor praised safety efforts by the Government of India (Centre) and by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Gor also described Jammu & Kashmir as an “important part of India” and suggested that the United States may re-evaluate its travel advisory for the region.

At the time described in the reporting, the United States travel advisory for Jammu & Kashmir was in the category “Level 4 – Do not travel”. Gor indicated that travel warnings could be downgraded, and he said Americans want to visit the region.

Omar Abdullah said the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss U.S.–India relations and what the United States can do regarding Jammu & Kashmir, adding that “legacy issues” would need time to resolve.

Pakistan reportedly summoned the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires and lodged a strong demarche concerning Gor’s remarks about Jammu & Kashmir.
