What happened: RLD Uttar Pradesh leadership change
Ramashish Rai resigned as the Uttar Pradesh president of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). Rai sent his resignation to RLD party president and Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Education Jayant Chaudhary. RLD appointed Aishwarya Raj Singh as the new Uttar Pradesh state president.
Reasons claimed by Ramashish Rai
Ramashish Rai cited “attacks on institutions” and “rampant corruption” as reasons for leaving the Uttar Pradesh leadership of RLD. Rai claimed that democracy is being “usurped” by powerful actors. Rai also alleged that society is being divided along caste and religious lines for electoral advantage. Rai further alleged neglect of public-interest areas such as education and employment.
Rai’s contrast with RLD founder Ajit Singh
Ramashish Rai said Rashtriya Lok Dal founder Ajit Singh took firm positions on issues affecting farmers and youth, including confronting prevailing pressures when needed. Rai alleged that RLD stayed silent when students and youth protested, and Rai said that staying silent is not the party’s style. Rai also stated that Rai’s decision was guided by an “inner voice” and that Rai aimed to act in the broader interests of society and Indian democracy. Rai said that Rai would decide any future political move after consulting supporters.
