The 2026 Commonwealth Games have been redesigned into a smaller event after Victoria withdrew as host in 2023 because of rising costs. Glasgow was later selected as host in September 2024, and the event is being presented as the Reimagined Games with a leaner venue and sport format.
The reduction is significant. The Glasgow edition is planned across 10 disciplines at 4 venues, compared with Birmingham 2022, which had 19 sports across 15 venues. The organising model is described as privately funded and self-sustaining.
For India, the smaller format still leaves strong medal pathways in athletics, boxing, and weightlifting. The competition features Neeraj Chopra in athletics, with Arshad Nadeem as a key rival, and also names Josh Kerr, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Danielle Williams, and Faith Cherotich among other title contenders.
