Karnataka has launched a targeted effort to improve HIV diagnosis among people who are infected but do not know their status. The issue matters because treatment can only begin after diagnosis, and undetected cases continue to pose a public health challenge.

What happened

The Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society (KSAPS) said 56,406 persons in the State are estimated to be unaware of being HIV-positive. At the same time, more than two lakh people are already receiving treatment, showing that the next challenge is not only treatment access but also case detection.

UPSC may examine why early diagnosis, stigma reduction, and last-mile linkage to treatment are as important as treatment coverage in controlling HIV/AIDS.
