What happened
Delhi Police said clashes near Jantar Mantar on Wednesday injured two Assistant Commissioners of Police and led to registration of an FIR. Police said at least six personnel were injured and used tear gas to disperse the crowd.
One officer said he was hit by a stone on the forehead, suffered bleeding and a minor fracture, and was treated at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Another officer said protesters surrounded him near the Tolstoy Marg–Sansad Marg intersection, allegedly pelted stones and threw water bottles, knocked him down, and assaulted him before senior officers rescued him.
UPSC may frame the issue around how police maintain public order during protests, the legal basis for dispersing unlawful assembly, and the administrative responsibility to investigate injuries to police personnel and civilians. The issue also links to the balance between the right to protest and the duty of the State to prevent violence.
