What happened
Cloudbursts over the previous 24 hours reportedly triggered flash floods in Pahalgam, a hill station in south Kashmir. The floods damaged four hotels and multiple houses, swept away vehicles in the Awoora stream, and entered hotel premises. Officials said scores of tourists were shifted to safer locations and the road connecting Bijbehara and Pahalgam was cut off.

Political and civil society allegations
People’s Democratic Party leaders and activists alleged rampant construction in violation of environmental norms. Iltija Mufti accused a “mafia” of operating in ecologically fragile Pahalgam and said hotels had encroached on flood channels or forest land. Activist Sahil Parray alleged hidden data on hotel construction and pointed to unchecked commercialisation, shrinking green cover, and weak enforcement of environmental safeguards.
