What happened
Delhi’s Directorate of Education has identified 14 government school buildings that require demolition after structural audits. The government has already approved demolition of either full structures or parts of seven schools, while approvals for the remaining seven are still being processed.
The Directorate of Education is examining 108 schools in total as part of a wider review of government school infrastructure. The audits include third-party structural checks and profiling of buildings and essential services such as electricity, plumbing, furniture, and fire safety.
Background and earlier position
According to officials, many of the flagged buildings are around 40 years old. Some schools are operating in dilapidated structures, including tin sheds or partly constructed buildings, which raises concerns about classroom safety and service quality.
