What happened
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart after receiving multiple consumer complaints alleging violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The complaints alleged supply of expired, spoiled, rotten, contaminated, and otherwise unsafe food products.
FSSAI directed Swiggy Instamart to submit a detailed explanation and compliance report. FSSAI said legal action would follow if the platform failed to comply. Swiggy Instamart said it was reviewing the flagged listings and coordinating with authorities.
Allegations cited by FSSAI
The complaints cited specific examples: whey protein and a packaged mixture allegedly supplied after expiry dates; an organic egg allegedly found rotten, with a foul odour and signs of contamination; and a paratha item allegedly spoiled and emitting a foul odour.
Additional allegations included delivery of contaminated eggs and milk, damaged packaged foods, and an infant food formulation allegedly found highly deteriorated and unsafe because of contamination and improper storage or handling. FSSAI also alleged that the same product was supplied again after a return.
