What happened: blockade of Meghalaya-registered vehicles bound for Shillong
Cab operators in Assam continued blocking Meghalaya-registered vehicles at inter-state entry points to Shillong for a second day. The reported trigger was attacks on 19 August against Assam-registered vehicles during a Khasi Students’ Union rally in Shillong.
The blockade disrupted movement of both passengers and goods between Assam and Meghalaya through entry points on the Shillong-bound route, including Jorabat and Khanapara.
Tensions persisted despite appeals from both States’ chief ministers for peace and restraint.

Assam State Drivers’ Association members stated that they would not end the blockade unless the Meghalaya government punishes people responsible for damaging vehicles and assaulting people, and provides compensation for damages.
