What happened
Tamil Nadu government filed an appeal in the Supreme Court challenging a Madras High Court decision that quashed compassionate appointment orders for relatives of people killed in the Karur stampede.
The Madras High Court’s Madurai Bench set aside the government’s job orders dated July 27. The High Court reasoned that the Tamil Nadu government’s appointments conflicted with existing compassionate appointment guidelines that govern how such recruitment should be done.
The High Court also indicated that the compassionate employment orders were under challenge after the High Court ruling, and the Tamil Nadu government’s Supreme Court appeal seeks to overturn the High Court’s decision.
Background and earlier position
The Karur stampede took place in September of the previous year during a TVK roadshow addressed by the party’s president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay. After the stampede, Tamil Nadu issued compassionate appointment orders granting government jobs to family members of people who were killed.
