Families and lawyers have alleged that some people detained during a police crackdown on protesters near Jantar Mantar were picked up from places away from the protest site, including Connaught Place. The allegations make the issue important for GS2 because the case raises questions on arrest procedure, preventive policing, and the protection of personal liberty.
The police detained a 55-year-old man from Connaught Place, although his family claims he was not part of the protest and had gone there after suffering from a medical condition that causes memory loss and delusions. His wife says he left home on Monday afternoon saying he was going for namaz and did not return, and the family was later informed around 11:30 p.m. that he had been detained.
According to the wife, she was allowed to briefly meet him around 2 a.m. at Mandir Marg police station to deliver his medicines. She says the family waited until about 4 a.m. before returning to Delhi on Tuesday afternoon for his release.
Delhi Police detained over 70 people on Monday and housed them in lock-ups in North West and New Delhi districts. About 60 detainees from North West district were produced before a court on Tuesday and released.
