Panel will take plaints of sexual assault by police: SC
SC directs women protesters alleging sexual molestation by police during the NEET-UG protest crackdown to file complaints directly to the High Powered Enquiry Committee’s nodal officer.
The Supreme Court directed that women protesters alleging sexual molestation involving police personnel during the NEET-UG protest crackdown on 20 July in New Delhi can submit complaints directly to the High Powered Enquiry Committee’s nodal officer.
The Supreme Court stated that the High Powered Enquiry Committee’s nodal officer should be a judicial officer. Senior advocate Shobha Gupta pressed for a separate, sensitive mechanism so that women protesters can file complaints and seek legal action against police personnel.
What prioritisation and assessment was asked for the High Powered Enquiry Committee?
The Supreme Court instructed the High Powered Enquiry Committee to prioritise complaints involving targeted violence, harassment and molestation of women protesters. The Supreme Court also asked the committee to assess the alleged grievous harm and injury caused by police and security authorities.
