What happened
The Delhi government has issued a show-cause notice to a private school in Janakpuri after a three-year-old student was allegedly raped by a caretaker. The Education Department has proposed taking over the school’s management because officials say the institution failed to report the crime, tried to conceal it, and showed serious safety and administrative lapses.
The government’s action turns the incident into a wider governance issue. The school is now facing scrutiny not only for the alleged sexual assault but also for compliance failures that, according to the Delhi government, point to deeper institutional neglect.
What the inquiry flagged
According to the Education Department’s inquiry, the school lacked basic child-protection systems and had non-working CCTV cameras. The inquiry also flagged the absence of a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012-trained nodal officer and a child protection committee.
The inquiry further cited inadequate police verification of guards and alleged use of an unauthorised residential building in Narang Colony for nursery and kindergarten classes. The Delhi government also referred to financial irregularities, including alleged diversion of about ₹6 crore meant for employees’ retirement benefits toward loan repayment.
