What happened
The Madhya Pradesh Cabinet approved a draft Uniform Civil Code Bill. The draft is scheduled to be introduced in the Assembly’s Monsoon Session. The proposal is important because it moves a state government into one of India’s most contested constitutional debates: whether civil law should be uniform across communities.
The draft proposes bans on polygamy, triple talaq, and nikah halala. It also introduces tighter rules for live-in relationships and requires registration of marriages and divorces through government portals.

It would declare verbal divorce and informal panchayat decisions invalid. It would also remove the term "illegitimate" from the legal framework and extend equal legal status to children born within marriage, outside marriage, through adoption, surrogacy, or assisted reproductive technology.
