What happened: ICMR’s H1N1 strain update and clinical messaging

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) reported that Influenza A (H1N1) viruses currently circulating in India are a Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1) pdm09-like strain.

ICMR stated that the circulating viruses belong to clade 6B.1A.5a2a and subclade D.3.1.1. Based on ongoing surveillance, ICMR concluded that no new H1N1 strain has been identified in India.

ICMR described the circulating H1N1 strains as well matched with Northern Hemisphere vaccine strains. ICMR guidance also stated that seasonal influenza (including H1N1) is generally self-limiting, with many patients recovering with rest and appropriate care.

ICMR’s guidance listed common symptoms as fever, cough, headache, and body ache.

ICMR’s guidance advised medical consultation if symptoms persist, worsen, or become severe. The guidance highlighted children, the elderly, and people with underlying conditions as higher risk groups for complications.
