What happened: Union and Delhi officials review H1N1 preparedness

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda reviewed preparedness for the H1N1 influenza situation with a focus on Delhi. Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh attended the review. Nadda emphasised continued vigilance through strong surveillance and proactive preparedness, and requested close monitoring of influenza trends.

Delhi government data cited a rise in local H1N1 cases to 1,777, including 114 new cases reported on Thursday. The review noted that no deaths had been reported at the time of the review meeting.

The Union Health Ministry reviewed whether Delhi’s healthcare facilities were adequate, including hospital beds, critical care infrastructure, and essential supplies.

Nadda urged public awareness around prevention, including respiratory hygiene and hand hygiene. Nadda advised that people with persistent or severe respiratory symptoms, breathing difficulty, or other warning signs should seek timely medical advice.

The Chief Minister’s Office stated that daily review meetings were being held by the mission director with Chief District Medical Officers to continuously monitor the situation. The Chief Minister’s Office also stated that H1N1 was the dominant influenza subtype in the current year, while H3N2 dominated last year.
