A Lok Sabha Speaker-constituted three-member inquiry committee concluded that charges framed as Articles of charge I, II, and III against former Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Verma were “proved” in connection with burnt currency notes reportedly discovered after a fire at his official residence.
Background and earlier position
The inquiry began after allegations surfaced following a reported fire at Justice Varma’s official residence on March 14, 2025, with firefighters reportedly finding large quantities of burnt currency notes in a storeroom. A motion for removal of Justice Varma was moved by nearly 200 MPs, and the inquiry was constituted under the Judges (Inquiry) Act.
What changed now
The inquiry committee submitted its final findings as a two-volume report and tabled it in both Houses of Parliament. Justice Varma resigned on April 9, 2026, and the inquiry committee recorded its view that the inquiry could continue in his absence if Justice Varma had been given a reasonable opportunity to participate and the proceedings had moved substantially into the evidentiary stage.
