The Ministry of Textiles says the Government of India is facilitating pilot projects across the country to build awareness and capacity on global best practices in sustainable production and consumption. The stated focus is on green technology adoption, recycling, and waste reduction in the textile sector.

The Ministry of Textiles also mentions a project titled “Eliminating Hazardous Chemicals from Textile Fashion Supply Chain”. The project is being implemented in partnership with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and is supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Why the textile sector matters

Textile and apparel manufacturing is closely linked to industrial pollution, chemical use, water use, energy use, and waste generation. A shift toward cleaner production can improve environmental performance while also supporting export competitiveness, market access, environmental resilience, economic resilience, and investor confidence.
