What happened
The Union Finance Minister announced the Tex-Eco Initiative in the Union Budget 2026-27 to promote a globally competitive and sustainable textile and apparel sector. The initiative places circular economy methods at the centre of textile policy.
The proposed focus is on textile waste management, recycling, value addition, recycled fibres, new materials, sustainable packaging, and other high-value products made from discarded textiles.
What the initiative seeks to build
The Ministry of Textiles has linked the Tex-Eco Initiative to collaboration among research institutions, Textile Research Associations, Centres of Excellence, industry, start-ups, and other stakeholders. The policy direction is to turn textile waste into inputs for new industrial products rather than treat it only as disposal material.
