What happened
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said that the Government of India is focusing on maritime cooperation with partners in the Indian Ocean Region through development assistance, capacity building, economic cooperation, connectivity, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) support, and defence and maritime security cooperation.
The ministry said that these efforts are intended to support sustainable socio-economic development in the region. The ministry also said that maritime agreements are one instrument used to promote regional maritime cooperation.
UPSC may frame the Indian Ocean Region issue around India’s maritime policy, the balance between development partnerships and maritime security, and the role of connectivity and HADR in building regional influence. The topic can also be linked to India’s maritime strategy, port-led development, and cooperation with island and littoral states.
