What happened
The Marine Products Export Development Authority is implementing the Technology Development for Specific Value-Added Marine Products (TDSVMP) Scheme to support seafood value addition and export readiness. The Export Inspection Council under the Department of Commerce is also conducting quality-control and food-safety compliance work for marine products exported from India.
These two institutional roles address different parts of the seafood export chain. The Marine Products Export Development Authority supports infrastructure and processing upgrades, while the Export Inspection Council checks whether export establishments meet importing countries’ requirements.
Background and earlier position
India’s seafood export sector depends on processing capacity, cold-chain infrastructure, laboratory testing, and certification systems. Export competitiveness in this sector is shaped not only by production volumes but also by value addition, residue control, and compliance with destination-country standards.
The Export Inspection Council is the competent authority for quality control and inspection of notified export products, including marine products. For shrimp exports, compliance with food-safety requirements has also required testing for banned antibiotics and related certification support.
