What happened
The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting announced that journalists accredited with the Press Information Bureau (PIB) are covered under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) for themselves and their family members across India.
The Ministry also stated that PIB-accredited journalists can receive treatment at Government hospitals and at CGHS-empanelled private hospitals, with treatment provided at CGHS rates.
Background and earlier position
CGHS is a Central Government healthcare system that provides services to notified beneficiary categories through Government facilities and through private hospitals empanelled under CGHS.
In such schemes, a person’s access depends on whether the person’s eligibility category is included as a CGHS-covered beneficiary group.
