National Highways Authority of India has announced an initiative to empanel Indian Institutes of Technology and other reputed technical institutions for independent proof checking of hydraulic studies and major bridge designs in new National Highway projects. The policy direction is relevant because bridge failures can create large safety, economic, and logistical costs, and because major bridges on National Highway corridors are expected to serve for decades.
